These are a few easy suggestions for building a storage shed and remember, you do not need to be a professional or an expert to build a practical and good-looking shed.  But you will need good-quality storage shed plans or you will risk wasting a lot of time and cash and probably end up with a building that does not work properly.

First, carefully choose the site where you will build your storage shed.  For example, if you want it to store your garden tractor you must have easy access for it.  The measurements of the storage shed are very important, and it is sensible to go for larger rather than smaller – you will inevitably find things later that need to go in the shed, and that were overlooked when you chose your storage shed plans!

The second step in how to build a storage shed is to make a list of the large or bulky things that will be stored, and plan a space for them. For example, will there be enough space for that tractor?  Will you require lots of shelves?  Will you be storing materials such as paint that need to be kept in the dark?  If you think that a small 6 x 6 ft storage shed will suffice, go for the next size up.  You will be glad later.

Your storage shed plans will give you many combinations of shape, size and construction.  Apex or pent style roof?  Wooden, metal, plastic or even concrete construction?  It is really easy to adapt your storage shed to be exactly the way you want, and those storage shed plans that we recommend will provide a comprehensive list of tools and materials needed for putting the shed together.

In deciding how to build a storage shed you could choose to make it from metal or plastic, but wood is the preferred option for most sheds because it comes from renewable resources, is very easy to use and it blends naturally in any location.  It should be treated with chemical preserving agents or, even better, be pressure-treated during final production.

Finally you need to decide on the base.  Your storage shed plans will probably recommend a wooden floor depending on the shed size, and this will be satisfactory for light traffic.  However wooden floors are not strong enough for storing heavy items, oil products or corrosive liquids.  A concrete foundation is the best solution.  It needs to be at least 4 inches deep and 2 or 3 inches wider than the shed footprint.  This will cost a bit more (maybe $200 more than a wooden floor, depending on the size) but will last the life of the shed, take all the wear you can throw at it and be maintenance-free.
